Career Education

This half-credit course covers the following subject areas:  The Career Development Process; Identifying Your Values, Skills, and Strengths; Getting to Know the Job Market; Workplace Behaviors; Decision Making; Goal Setting and Planning; Completing a Job Application; Writing a Resume; Cover Letters and Other Business Correspondence; Interviewing; Workplace Systems and Culture; and Teams and Teamwork. Graded coursework includes 12 chapter assignments.

 

Personal Finance I

This half-credit course covers the following chapters dealing with personal finance:  The Consumer's Role in the Marketplace, Consumer Problems in the Marketplace, Decisions--Values and Goals, Decisions--Consumer Information, Advertising, Consumer Action, Earning and Managing Income, Money and Banking, Saving and Investing, Consumer Credit, and Credit Management.  Graded coursework includes assignments and tests for 11 chapters and application exercises in a supplement.

 

Personal Finance II

This half-credit course covers the following chapters dealing with personal finance:  Taxes and Social Security, Life and Health Insurance, Nutrition, Food Shopping, Transportation--Buying Decisions, Transportation--The Cost of Auto Ownership, Housing, Clothing, Human Services, The United States Economy, and Measuring Economic Activity.  Graded coursework includes assignments and tests for 11 chapters and application exercises in a supplement.

 

Group Dynamics

This half-credit course is a required course in the High School Completion Program at COCC.  It is graded pass/fail.  In this course, the student learns to lead and participate in groups more effectively to prepare him/her for the workplace.  To pass, the student must read about working in groups and leadership skills, successfully lead at least three group discussions, and write a three-page self-evaluation of his/her performance within the groups.  Successful participation and leadership of groups will be determined by instructor observation and peer evaluations.  The instructor will grade the self-evaluation.
